A sensor also know as a detector which converts a physical quantity into a signal which can be rad by an observer or one of todays electrical interments. e.g. mercury in a glass thermometer can convert the measured temperature into the expansion or contraction of the liquid, which then can be read  on a glass tube.

These sensors are used in normal everyday objects such as lamps which can be brighten or dim by touch its base. elevator touch sensitive buttons there are many more uses that people are unaware of like machines, medicine,  cars,aerospace, robotics and manufacturing.
